How to Cut Jeans to Make a Wider Leg
Jeans are a wardrobe staple that never goes out of style. However, trends in denim constantly change, leaving you with jeans that have the perfect fit but maybe not the most fashionable leg width. In this guide, we’ll show you how to cut jeans to make a wider leg, allowing you to breathe new life into your old favorite pairs.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
To start, you’ll need the following supplies:
– A pair of jeans
– Fabric scissors
– Tailor’s chalk or a fabric pen
– A measuring tape
– A sewing machine or needle and thread
– An iron and ironing board
Step 2: Analyze the Jeans
Put on your jeans and stand in front of a mirror. Identify where on the jeans the leg starts to feel too tight or narrow for your liking. Keep this area in mind, as that’s where we’ll be making alterations.
Step 3: Mark Your Cutting Line
Lay the jeans flat on a table or floor, ensuring they’re smooth and wrinkles are removed. Using your tailor’s chalk or fabric pen, mark along the outer seam, starting from the point you identified in Step 2 as feeling too tight. Continue marking down the leg at an angle to create a gradual increase in width. For an even more dramatic flare, extend your line even beyond the original hemline.
Step 4: Cut Your Jeans
Using sharp fabric scissors, carefully cut along your marked lines through both layers of fabric (the front and back of the jean). Make sure to leave about 1-inch of extra fabric beyond your marked line for seam allowances.
Step 5: Hem Your Jeans
Fold over the raw edge approximately half an inch and iron it down. Then fold it again by another half inch, encasing any frayed edges inside. Pin this folded hem to secure it in place.
Step 6: Sew Your New Seams
Using a sewing machine (or a needle and thread if sewing by hand), sew a straight stitch along the inner edge of the folded hem. Make sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of your stitching for added durability.
Step 7: Press Your Jeans
After sewing, give your redesigned jeans another press with an iron to set the seams and smooth out any wrinkles.
And there you have it! Your once-narrow jeans now have a stylish wider leg. This not only makes them more comfortable to wear but also gives them an on-trend look. Give yourself a pat on the back for successfully breathing new life into your old favorite pair of jeans.
