Scallops are a delicious and popular seafood option that can be enjoyed in a variety of dishes. However, before you can cook and savor them, it is essential to clean them properly. Here are 11 easy-to-follow steps to clean scallops.
1. Gather your supplies: To clean scallops, you will need a cutting board, a small sharp knife, a colander or strainer, and a bowl of cold water.
2. Rinse the scallops: Place the scallops into the colander or strainer and run cold water over them to remove any sand or debris.
3. Sort the scallops: Divide them into two groups – those with an easily visible hinge and those without. The hinge is the point at which the two shells meet.
4. Open hinged scallops: For scallops with a visible hinge, hold one in your hand with the rounded side facing down. Insert the knife into the hinge and gently twist to separate the top shell from the bottom shell.
5. Run the knife along the inside: Once the shells are partially separated, run your knife carefully along the inside of the scallop’s top shell to sever the connecting muscle fully.
6. Remove & discard top shell: Collect any discarded shells for appropriate disposal later.
7. Cut out guts and membrane: With your small knife, cut away and remove the dark-colored guts as well as any fibrous membrane attached to them.
8. Rinse again thoroughly: Once cleaned of debris, run cold water over each scallop individually for a final rinse outside and inside both shells, ensuring they are entirely free of sand and grit.
9. Open non-hinged scallops: For any unopened scallops without clear hinges, follow steps 4-8 but use caution when opening them; inserting your knife in any gap between shells may take longer to separate.
10. Detach scallop from its lower shell: Hold the open scallop in one hand while carefully scraping the flat edge of your knife under the scallop’s meat, separating it from the shell. This step should be done gently to avoid damaging the meat.
11. Rinse and pat dry: After detaching, give each scallop one final rinse in cold water, and then gently pat dry with a clean paper towel. Now you are ready to cook and enjoy your cleaned scallops!
By following these 11 steps, you will ensure that your scallops are cleaned properly, preserving their taste and texture for maximum enjoyment in your favorite recipes. Happy cooking!
