As a writer, it is important to keep track of your word count to ensure that you are meeting the required word count for a document or article. In Google Docs, checking the word count is a simple process that only takes a few seconds. Here’s how to check word count on Google Docs.

Step 1: Open the Google Docs Document

The first step to checking the word count is to open the Google Docs document that you want to check the word count for. Open your Google Drive account, click on the document you want to check, and open it in Google Docs.

Step 2: Open the Word Count Tool

Once you have opened the document in Google Docs, you can access the word count tool by clicking on the ‘Tools’ tab in the menu bar. From the dropdown menu, select ‘Word count’.

Step 3: View the Word Count

After selecting the word count tool, a small window will appear that displays the document’s word count, the number of characters (with and without spaces), the number of pages, the number of paragraphs, and the number of lines. This gives you a comprehensive view of the document’s statistics.

Step 4: Check the Word Count While Typing

If you would like to keep track of the word count as you type, or you want to set a specific word count target, you can add the word count tool to the footer of the document. To do this, click on the ‘Insert’ tab and select ‘Footer’. Once the footer has been added, click on the ‘Insert’ tab again, and then select ‘Page Number’, and then ‘Page count’. Right-click on the page number and select ‘Format page number’, scroll down and select ‘Inserted’, then click ‘Apply’. After that, you can replace the page number with the word count tool by clicking on it, then selecting ‘Insert’, and then ‘Bookmark’. Name the bookmark ‘word count’ and then click on ‘Close’. Type ‘word count’ in the footer, and you’ll see the real-time word count as you type.

Conclusion

Keeping track of the word count is an essential part of writing. With Google Docs, viewing the word count is easy, as it provides accurate information on your document’s statistics. Whether you need to check your word count while typing or after you have completed the document, the word count tool in Google Docs makes it easy to stay up to date
