How to Change a UPVC Door Lock: 9 Steps
A UPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) door lock is a common type of lock found in modern homes due to its durability, energy efficiency, and low maintenance requirements. However, just like any other lock, a UPVC door lock may need replacement after normal wear and tear, or when security is compromised. Changing a UPVC door lock is relatively simple with the right tools and following these 9 steps.
1. Gather your tools: Before starting, you will need a screwdriver, tape measure, replacement lock cylinder, and possibly a utility knife if there’s paint around the screws.
2. Choose the correct replacement lock cylinder: Measure your current door lock’s length from inside to outside. Also note if it has a thumbturn (a flat lever used for turning the lock from the inside) or it’s key-operated on both sides. Choose your new lock cylinder accordingly.
3. Remove all screws from the handle: Open the door and remove any visible screws from both sides of the handle. If there are no visible screws, look for concealed ones under covers or caps which will need to be removed first.
4. Unscrew the retaining screw: Locate the retaining screw on the side of the door close to where the key is inserted. This screw holds the cylinder in place and will need to be completely unscrewed.
5. Remove the old cylinder: Insert your key into the existing cylinder and turn it slightly while gently pulling towards you until it comes out of the door. Be cautious not to damage any internal mechanisms during this process.
6. Insert the new lock cylinder: Align it with the hole for it on either side of your door. Gently move it back and forth while turning your key until you manage to find its correct position, where it slides smoothly into place without force.
7. Secure the new cylinder: Once the new lock cylinder is in place, insert the retaining screw and tighten it to secure the cylinder. Ensure that the cylinder is held in place and test your key to make sure it moves smoothly on both sides of the door.
8. Reattach the door handles: Replace any covers or caps you removed earlier, and then put the handles back on by lining up their holes with those in the door’s lock mechanism. Insert and tighten all screws on both sides of your handle.
9. Test the lock for proper functioning: Lock and unlock your door from both inside and outside to ensure that your new lock cylinder works smoothly and safely.
Changing a UPVC door lock may seem intimidating, but with these clear steps, even a DIY novice can accomplish it without professional assistance. Just remember to keep your safety top priority, use compatible parts, and double-check your work throughout the process.
