Whether you are a football enthusiast, a statistics buff, or someone looking to sharpen your analytic skills, understanding how to calculate quarterback ratings is a fundamental part of assessing the performance of the most vital player on the football field. The NFL quarterback rating, also known as passer rating, is a measure that evaluates the efficiency of a quarterback’s passing performance. This article will guide you through the steps to calculate the quarterback rating based on official NFL rules.

The formula utilizes four components: completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdowns per attempt, and interceptions per attempt. It combines all these factors into a single number that ranges from 0 to 158.3. To make it user-friendly for you, we broke down the calculation into five simple steps:

Step 1: Accumulate necessary data

To calculate a quarterback rating, you will need the following data points for any given player in an individual game or throughout the season:

– Pass attempts

– Pass completions

– Passing yards

– Touchdown passes

– Interceptions

Step 2: Calculate completion percentage

Divide pass completions by pass attempts and multiply this by 100:

Completion percentage = (Pass completions / Pass attempts) * 100

Step 3: Determine individual category ratings

Calculate each of the four components using the following equations:

A = ((Completion percentage – 30) / 20)

B = ((Yards per attempt – 3) / 4)

C = (Touchdowns per attempt * 20)

D = (2.375 – (Interceptions per attempt * 25))

Note that if any of these calculations result in a negative number, consider it as zero. Furthermore, if any component is above 2.375, cap it at that value.

Step 4: Combine category ratings

Add the four component ratings together:

Total rating = A + B + C + D

Step 5: Finalize the quarterback rating

Multiply the total rating by 100 and divide by 6:

Quarterback Rating = (Total rating * 100) / 6

And that’s it! You now have the quarterback rating. This metric allows fans and analysts to compare quarterback performances more objectively, considering their pass attempts, completion accuracy, touchdown efficiency, and interception avoidance.

The perfect passer rating of 158.3 is achieved with at least a 77.5% completion rate, 12.5+ yards per attempt, a touchdown on at least 11.875% of attempts, and no interceptions.

With this knowledge under your belt, you can now dive deeper into football statistics and analyze your favorite quarterbacks – becoming an expert on this fascinating, complex game.
