Whether you’re shopping for clothes, appliances, or services, discounts can make a huge difference in your overall spending. In many cases, retailers and service providers offer percentage-based discounts to entice customers. One popular discount rate is 20%. Knowing how to quickly calculate 20% off can help you determine the final price of an item and make better-informed decisions when shopping or budgeting. In this article, we’ll break down how to calculate 20% off with a few simple methods.

Method 1: The Multiplication Method

1. Find the original price of the item or service you want to purchase.

2. Convert the discount percentage (in this case, 20%) to a decimal by dividing it by 100. This will give you the discount rate as a decimal number.

For example: `20 (percentage) ÷ 100 = 0.2 (decimal)`

3. Multiply the original price by the discount rate (decimal number). The result is the amount that will be discounted from the original price.

For example: `Original Price × Discount Rate (decimal) = Discount Amount`
`$100 × 0.2 = $20`

4. Subtract the discount amount from the original price to find the final price.

For example: `Original Price – Discount Amount = Final Price`
`$100 – $20 = $80`

And there you have it! You’ve calculated an item’s price after applying a 20% discount.

Method 2: The Mental Math Method

For those who prefer to do quick mental math calculations, follow these steps:

1. Find the original price of the item or service.

2. Divide the original price by 5 (since 20% is one-fifth or 1/5). This will give you the discount amount.

For example: `$100 ÷ 5 = $20`

3. Subtract the discount amount from the original price to get the final price.

For example: `$100 – $20 = $80`

Now you’ve quickly calculated the 20% off price without a calculator!

In conclusion, knowing how to calculate 20% off is a valuable skill for managing your personal finances and making smart shopping decisions. With these two simple methods, you’ll be better equipped to spot deals and maximize your savings while shopping.
