Weight loss is a common goal for many people, whether it’s to feel better, look better, or improve overall health. Calculating percent weight loss can be a useful tool in tracking progress and setting realistic goals. In this article, we’ll break down the steps for calculating percent weight loss and make it easier for you to track your progress.

Step 1: Determine your starting weight

The first step in calculating percent weight loss is determining your starting weight. This will be the initial reference point to compare all future weigh-ins. Make sure to measure your weight accurately by using a calibrated scale and weighing yourself at the same time of day (preferably in the morning) before eating or drinking.

Step 2: Determine your current weight

Next, weigh yourself again and note down your current weight. This is the weight that you will use to calculate your progress since you started your weight loss journey. Again, make sure to measure it accurately and consistently.

Step 3: Calculate the difference in weight

Now that we have these two values – starting weight (SW) and current weight (CW) – we can calculate our difference in weight (DW). This is simply the difference between these two numbers:

DW = SW – CW

Step 4: Divide the difference in weight by the starting total

In order to calculate percent weight loss, divide the difference in weight (DW) by the starting total (SW). This will give you a decimal value representing the proportion of total starting bodyweight lost:

Decimal Value = DW / SW

Step 5: Convert the decimal value into a percentage

Finally, you’ll need to convert this decimal value into a percentage. To do this, simply multiply the decimal value by 100:

Percent Weight Loss = Decimal Value * 100

And now you have calculated your percent weight loss!

Example Calculation:

Let’s say your starting weight was 200 pounds, and your current weight is 180 pounds:

SW = 200

CW = 180

DW = SW – CW = 200 – 180 = 20

Decimal Value = DW / SW = 20 / 200 = 0.1

Percent Weight Loss = Decimal Value * 100 = 0.1 * 100 = 10%

In this example, you have lost 10% of your starting bodyweight.

By following these simple steps, you can easily track your weight loss progress by calculating the percent weight loss. Remember to be patient and focus on making consistent, healthy changes in your diet and exercise routine for long-term success. Good luck!
