Cubic footage is a measurement of volume that’s commonly used in various industries such as construction, shipping, and interior design. It represents the amount of space an object takes up in three-dimensional space. Calculating cubic footage is a crucial skill for determining the size of storage units, shipping containers, and room dimensions, among other things. In this article, we’ll describe the steps to calculate cubic footage.

Step 1: Measure the Length, Width, and Height

To begin calculating cubic footage, you’ll need to measure the length, width, and height of the objects or spaces. Use a measuring tape to obtain these measurements in feet or any other preferred unit.

Step 2: Convert Units if Necessary

If your measurements are not in feet (e.g., inches or meters), it’s crucial to convert them to feet before proceeding. Use a conversion factor or an online unit converter for this task.

Conversion factors for common units:

1 inch = 0.0833 feet

1 meter = 3.2808 feet

Step 3: Calculate Volume with Multiplication

Now that all measurements are in feet, multiply the length by width by height to find the cubic footage:

Cubic Feet (Volume) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Height (ft)

Example:

Suppose we want to calculate the cubic footage for a room that measures 15 feet in length, 10 feet wide, and 8 feet high.

Cubic Feet (Volume) = 15 ft × 10 ft × 8 ft = 1200 ft³

Step 4: Round Off Your Answer

Since measurements can have minor discrepancies or be approximations themselves, round off your final answer to an appropriate level of precision.

For example:

1200 ft³ could be rounded off to approximately 1200 cubic feet or 1,200 ft³.

Conclusion:

Calculating cubic footage is a simple yet essential skill for many industries. By following these four steps—measuring length, width, and height, converting units if necessary, calculating volume through multiplication, and rounding off your answer—you can quickly find cubic footage for any object or space.
