In today’s world of eco-friendly transportation and fuel efficiency, many people need an easy method to compare the energy usage of different vehicles. One such method is measuring miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe), which is a useful way to compare the efficiency of electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. In this article, we will discuss how to calculate MPGe and understand its significance in your vehicle choices.

1. Understanding MPGe Basics

MPGe stands for “miles per gallon equivalent” and allows for direct comparisons between EV, PHEV, ICE, or even hydrogen fuel cell vehicles’ energy consumption. It measures the distance a vehicle can travel using the same amount of energy present in one gallon of gasoline, which is equal to approximately 33.7 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity.

2. Calculating MPGe for Electric Vehicles (EVs)

To calculate MPGe for an electric vehicle, you need two pieces of information: the total energy consumption of the vehicle (in kWh) over a specific distance and that distance itself (in miles). Follow these steps:

Step 1: Measure the energy consumption over a certain distance.

Energy consumed (kWh) = Total Energy Used ÷ Distance Traveled

Step 2: Divide the constant conversion factor by the energy consumption to obtain MPGe.

MPGe = 33.7 kWh ÷ Energy consumed (kWh)

3. Calculating MPGe for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs)

To calculate MPGe for PHEVs is slightly more complicated as they use both gasoline and electricity during their operation. To compute the overall MPGe for a PHEV, follow these steps:

Step 1: Measure the total gasoline consumed in gallons and convert it into kWh.

Gasoline Consumption (kWh) = Total Gasoline Consumed (gallons) × 33.7

Step 2: Measure the total electricity consumed in kWh.

Step 3: Compute the total energy consumption by summing both gasoline and electricity consumption.

Total Energy Consumption (kWh) = Gasoline Consumption (kWh) + Electricity Consumption (kWh)

Step 4: Divide the conversion factor by the total energy consumption to obtain MPGe.

MPGe = (33.7 kWh × Distance Traveled) ÷ Total Energy Consumption (kWh)

4. Understanding the Significance of MPGe

By using MPGe as a metric, you can directly compare different vehicle types’ efficiency side-by-side. It allows drivers to make more informed choices when purchasing vehicles, assessing various performance measures alongside environmental impact. However, it is essential to remember that individual driving habits, weather conditions, and additional factors can influence a vehicle’s real-world MPGe.

In conclusion, understanding and calculating MPGe is an effective way to assess and compare vehicle fuel efficiency across different powertrains. By having a working knowledge of MPGe, you can make more informed decisions when purchasing your next car or comparing the efficiency of different vehicles.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
