Step 1: Research Shaolin Monastery and Culture

To become a Shaolin monk, you must first learn about the rich history and culture of the Shaolin Monastery. This will help you understand the core beliefs, values, and practices of the Shaolin monks.

Step 2: Embrace Buddhism

Shaolin monks follow the teachings of Buddhism. To pursue this path, you must study and embrace Buddhist beliefs, philosophy, and practices.

Step 3: Learn Mandarin Chinese

The primary language spoken at the Shaolin Monastery is Mandarin Chinese. Learning how to speak, read, and write in Mandarin will be essential for your journey as a Shaolin monk.

Step 4: Familiarize Yourself with Shaolin Kung Fu

Shaolin Kung Fu is an integral part of the life and practice of a Shaolin monk. Begin learning the basic moves, stances, and forms of this martial art.

Step 5: Develop Discipline

Discipline is key for any aspiring Shaolin monk. Set goals for yourself in terms of mental focus, physical strength, resilience, and determination. Challenge yourself to stick to these goals no matter what obstacles come your way.

Step 6: Practice Meditation

Meditation is essential for cultivating inner peace and spiritual growth. Begin practicing daily meditation to develop your concentration, mindfulness, and self-awareness.

Step 7: Maintain a Vegan Diet

Shaolin monks follow a vegan diet in accordance with their Buddhist beliefs. Learn how to prepare simple but nourishing vegan meals as part of your journey toward becoming a Shaolin monk.

Step 8: Find a Mentor or Teacher

Seek out someone experienced in the ways of the Shaolin – either someone from the monastery or a respected teacher in your area – to guide you on your journey.

Step 9: Study Scriptures

Spend time reading sacred Buddhist texts, such as the Tripitaka or the Buddhist sutras. This will deepen your spiritual understanding and knowledge.

Step 10: Practice Humility and Compassion

Shaolin monks live their lives with humility and compassion as their guide. Work on cultivating a humble attitude and treating all beings with love and respect.

Step 11: Observe Precepts

Follow the basic precepts of Buddhism – abstaining from killing living beings, stealing, committing sexual misconduct, lying, and using intoxicating substances.

Step 12: Visit the Shaolin Monastery

If possible, plan a visit to the Shaolin Monastery in China to experience the daily life of a monk firsthand. This visit will help you determine if this spiritual path is truly right for you.

By following these 12 steps, you will be well on your way to becoming a Shaolin monk. Dedication, discipline, and patience are essential on this life-changing journey.
