How Do I Obtain A Degree in Edtech?

Edtech degrees prepare teacher education candidates to leverage technology in the classroom. These programs may focus on technology integration, remote learning, computer assisted-instruction, and practical learning experiences. Many of these degrees are specifically tailored to the needs of working educators, so they offer online learning opportunities and traditional campus-based experiences.

Program Overview

Edtech degrees prepare future educators and educational professionals to serve as technology leaders. Teacher education candidates explore education apps, develop pedagogical skills, devise classroom strategies, and learn how to support education through technology. For instance, teacher education candidates learn how to implement blended learning techniques, provide professional development to educators, and create technical assistance procedures for colleagues. The coursework will apply to K-12 classroom and adult education spaces.

Concentrations are available, and these degree programs emphasize new ways of acting and thinking about technology integration in the classroom. Teacher education candidates receive the  knowledge and skills needed to support tech-based learning and to render professional development assistance to educators. Assignments may explore how to design learning environments and integrate technology into the curriculum.

Program Outcomes

After graduating with a degree in Edtech, teacher education candidates will able to use theories, standards, and frameworks to select technology apps, platforms, systems, and equipment. Teacher education candidates will be able to conduct assessments, coursework, and workshops that engage learners through research-based strategies. Graduates will have the skills and abilities to integrate technology in educational spaces, facilitate digital learning, and produce positive student outcomes.

Graduates must demonstrate mastery of evidenced-based concepts and understand advanced techniques for designing, developing, and implementing tech-rich programs. They will demonstrate leadership competency by effectively managing resources, promoting continuous improvement, establishing cultures of learning, and conducting and applying research. Teacher education candidates will also understand the principles, theories, and models of curriculum design through technology platforms.

Coursework

Edtech degrees will include classes in research methods so that teacher education candidates will become consumers of educational research. Graduates will understand how to carry out education research in schools and classrooms. Student diversity coursework will review evidence-based instructional design models used to assess and instruct all types of learners. This will help educators create effective educational initiatives and serve traditionally underrepresented learner populations.

Courses in tech resource evaluation will teach participants how to use existing and emerging technologies to support positive student outcomes. Teacher education candidates will learn how to use identify areas of need and make recommendations based on costs and benefits. Classes in technology assessments will introduce learners to a variety of multimedia apps that help foster student performance and teacher achievement.

These degrees should be approved by the International Society for Technology in Education or the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Edtech degrees prepare graduates for careers in the field of education, such as multimedia specialists, instructional designers, and IT specialists. They also create business career opportunities as educational consultants or corporate trainers.

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.
