Here are the women who inspire us on International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of women around the world, to reflect on progress made, and to advocate for continued advancements towards gender equality. It’s also an occasion to recognize the inspiring women who pave the way for others with their courage, resilience, and determination.
Among these incredible figures is Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Prize laureate, who bravely defended her right to education against oppressive forces and continues to fight for girls’ education globally through the Malala Fund. Then there’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg, former Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court, whose legal career was marked by a ceaseless battle for gender equality and women’s rights.
We look up to Tarana Burke, a civil rights activist who founded the ‘Me Too’ movement providing support to survivors of sexual violence and raising awareness about the pervasiveness of such issues in society. We are inspired by Greta Thunberg, who despite her young age has become a global icon for climate change advocacy, demonstrating that one’s voice is never too small to make a difference.
New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has shown remarkable leadership characterized by empathy and effective crisis management which has been widely admired across the globe. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s eloquent writings and speeches about feminism in contemporary culture inspire many to think critically about gender norms and stereotypes.
There are countless other women whose actions and stories remain unsung yet are equally impactful. They are mothers, teachers, community leaders, doctors, entrepreneurs – all who play a pivotal role in shaping our future every day.
Individually, these women are extraordinary; together, they represent a powerful force advocating for change and progress. Their lives remind us that we all have a part to play in forging more inclusive societies. On International Women’s Day, we honor these luminaries as well as the everyday heroines around us. May their stories inspire courage and action today and every day following.
