Handwriting Vs Typing In The Learning Environment

Old-fashioned learning institutions prefer physical writing over typing on a computer. There are a few reasons for this – for example, when you write, you develop a better conceptual understanding of the work than you would if you typed it. On the other hand, more modern institutions have turned to typing in the learning environment.

In this article, we will be discussing how typing and writing compare to each other. We will also mention which medium of learning you should use in order to become a more successful student.

Handwriting

Tools

Writing is a skill that most people are taught at a very young age. You simply need a piece of paper and a pen or pencil, and you can write whatever you want.

Time And Flexibility

If you are given a school assignment, it will take you longer to complete it if you are going to be physically writing your work. However, you will have much more flexibility than you would on a computer. For example, computers often need updates or reboots. This can sometimes take a while, which would eat into your work time. If you write your assignment, you would simply have to whip out your pen and paper and begin working.

Understanding Of The Work

As mentioned, you develop a better conceptual understanding of your schoolwork when you physically write it out. Since writing is such a long and tedious process, it is difficult to copy sentences exactly word for word. When you adapt sentences in your own words, you gain a better understanding of what you are writing. This is why writing programs for kids are still valuable despite the prevalence of technology in the education system.

Typing

Tools

You require a lot more tools when typing on a computer than you do when writing. In the learning environment, you would need a computer of some sort and (most probably) an internet connection to share your work with teachers. It is also obviously a lot more expensive to do your schoolwork digitally.

Time And Flexibility

Typing your schoolwork on a computer can save you plenty of time. This is because it is much quicker to type sentences out than it is to write them. Many schools use technology for work simply because of the amount of time that it saves. However, it does take longer to log onto computers and get started on the work.

Which Is The Most Popular?

Most schools still use writing in the learning environment. However, this is not necessarily because they prefer it. As mentioned, having computers in the classroom is very expensive, and not all schools can afford it. Most schools that do use typing for their work have very good things to say about it.

Conclusion

There are pros and cons to both writing and typing in the learning environment. Writing is much cheaper and more flexible. Students also develop a better understanding of the work when they write it out. However, typing saves plenty of time and is a more efficient method of learning.
