Google Nest Hub 2nd Gen Review

As our homes become increasingly smart, technology manufacturers are continuing to innovate with devices that integrate seamlessly with our daily lives. One such device that has caught our attention is the Google Nest Hub 2nd Gen.

Launched in March 2021, the second generation of the Google Nest Hub builds on the success of the first generation by providing new features, functionality, and design improvements. Here’s our review of the Google Nest Hub 2nd Gen.

Design and Hardware

The Google Nest Hub 2nd Gen looks identical to its predecessor, with the same 7-inch display and fabric-covered base. However, Google has made a significant hardware update in the form of the inclusion of a new chip, which focuses solely on machine learning tasks. This inclusion ensures faster response times and a better user experience when using the device’s smart features.

The display quality has also been significantly improved, with an increase in pixel density from 1024 x 600 to 1280 x 800 pixels. This boost in resolution ensures videos, photos, and text are crisp and clear.

New Smart Features

The Google Nest Hub 2nd Gen includes a similar set of features as its predecessor, such as voice control, smart home integration, and a display for watching videos and viewing photos. However, with the updated hardware, the new Nest Hub offers additional smart features.

One of the standout features is the new Sleep Sensing ability. This feature utilizes its built-in radar sensor to monitor and analyze the user’s sleep patterns and provides personalized insights and recommendations for getting better sleep. It does all this without the need for any wearable devices or cameras in the bedroom.

Improved Audio

Audio quality on the Google Nest Hub 2nd Gen is another area in which Google has improved significantly. It now includes a 50mm speaker driver, compared to the 40mm driver on the previous model. This results in an improved bass response, a broader soundstage and clearer vocals, offering a more immersive experience when listening to music, podcasts or making hands-free phone calls.

Privacy Features

With privacy concerns being paramount in today’s environment, the Google Nest Hub 2nd Gen provides new privacy features to ensure users’ data protection. The device includes a hardware switch that physically disables the microphone, ensuring that the user can control when and if the device listens to their commands. Also, the Sleep Sensing feature mentioned above only stores sleep data locally on the device and is not shared with Google.

Conclusion

The Google Nest Hub 2nd Gen is an excellent addition to any smart home. The updated hardware, enhanced smart features, improved audio, and privacy features make it an excellent upgrade from the previous model. Its integration with other Google services, such as Google Assistant, makes it an indispensable tool for staying on top of your daily schedule, controlling your smart home devices, and enjoying entertainment hands-free. Overall, the Google Nest Hub 2nd Gen is a versatile, user-friendly, and impressive smart display.
