Leather laces are a fashionable and robust alternative to regular cloth laces. You can use them to lace boots, shoes, or any other type of footwear for that extra rugged look. However, tying leather laces can be a bit tricky because they are thicker and less flexible than their textile counterparts. In this article, we’ll explore 11 easy steps for tying leather laces effectively.

1. Buy the right leather laces: Before you start tying your leather laces, make sure you get the right size and style for your footwear. Ideally, they should be long enough to go through all the eyelets on your shoes while leaving some room for a secure knot.

2. Prepare your shoes: Remove any old or worn-out laces before adding the leather ones. Take this opportunity to clean your shoes too!

3. Untangle and straighten the leather laces: Leather laces can easily become twisted or tangled. Smooth them out by working out any knots gently.

4. Identify the aglets: Aglets refer to the plastic or metal tips at the end of a shoelace, which make it easier to thread through the eyelets or lace holes on your shoe.

5. Begin from the bottom: Start by inserting one end of a leather lace through the bottom-most eyelet on each side of your shoe.

6. Use an over-under pattern: Thread one lace over the other as you work upwards through each consecutive eyelet, creating an alternating pattern that resembles a staircase or ladder.

7. Pay attention to the tension: While tying leather laces, it’s essential to keep consistent tension throughout, so they don’t loosen easily as you walk.

8. Create loops for a secure knot: Once you’ve reached the top pair of eyelets, form loops (or bunny ears) with both ends of the shoelace.

9. Cross and tuck: Cross the loops over one another, then tuck one loop under the other to create a standard shoelace knot. However, instead of tightening it fully, form a second knot by repeating the same process.

10. Final touch: Adjust the tension of your leather laces in small increments until you find your ideal fit. Remember that leather stretches and molds to your foot over time, so you might need to readjust it once in a while.

11. Practice makes perfect: Leather laces can be tricky, but getting them tied efficiently is just a matter of practice. Repeating these 11 steps will ensure that you master this invaluable skill soon enough.

Now you’re fully equipped to tie your leather laces like a pro! Following these 11 easy steps will save you time and frustration while keeping your shoes looking stylish and secure all through the day.
