Spread the love

Starting your culinary journey can be an exciting yet daunting experience, but with guidance from accomplished chefs like Pati Jinich, Mexican cuisine chef and host of the PBS series “Pati’s Mexican Table,” you can turn that initial hesitation into confidence in the kitchen. Here are some of Chef Pati Jinich’s best tips for novice cooks looking to improve their kitchen skills.

1.Start with Fresh Ingredients

One of the foundations of great cooking is using fresh, high-quality ingredients. Fresh vegetables and fruits, quality proteins, and good fats are the raw materials that can elevate even the simplest dishes. As a beginner, focus on learning how to choose the freshest ingredients at the market.

2.Learn Basic Knife Skills

Proper knife skills not only ensure safety in the kitchen but also can dramatically improve your cooking efficiency and the final presentation of your dish. Start by learning how to hold a chef’s knife correctly and practice basic cuts such as chopping, dicing, mincing, and julienning.

3.Master Simple Techniques

Before moving onto advanced techniques, master simple cooking methods such as roasting, grilling, sautéing, and blanching. These basic techniques provide a foundation for creating various dishes and understanding how heat affects food.

4.Keep Your Pantry Stocked

Chef Jinich suggests keeping a well-stocked pantry filled with essentials like rice, beans, canned tomatoes, oils, vinegars, and spices. Having these staples at hand makes it easier to whip up a meal without frequent trips to the grocery store.

5.Taste As You Go

Seasoning is vital in cooking, and there is no substitute for tasting as you go. This habit will help you understand how flavors develop over time and how different seasonings interact with one another. Adjust your seasoning incrementally to avoid overdoing it

6.Embrace Mistakes

Every cook makes mistakes – it’s part of the learning process. Embrace them and take note of what went wrong so you don’t repeat them in the future. Mistakes are valuable lessons that can be turned into success over time

7.Be Organized – Mise en Place

The French term “mise en place,” meaning “everything in its place,” is a vital practice in cooking. By having all your ingredients prepared and ready before you start cooking, you can prevent scrambling during critical moments in the recipe.

8.Keep It Simple

Complexity doesn’t always equate to better flavor or presentation when starting out. Focus on simple recipes with fewer ingredients that allow you to hone your skills without getting overwhelmed.

9.Experiment with Flavors

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different herbs and spices – this is one way to learn what works together and what doesn’t. Pati Jinich encourages trying out new flavors within traditional recipes to make them your own.

10.Have Fun!

Lastly, remember that cooking should be enjoyable! Don’t put too much pressure on yourself; explore new recipes at your own pace and remember why you started cooking – to create delicious food that you love.

By following these tips from Chef Pati Jinich, beginners can find their footing in the kitchen more quickly and start on their path toward proficient and joyful cooking.
