Dauphinoise potatoes, a creamy and delicious dish originating from the Dauphiné region in France, is the perfect side dish to elevate any meal. Bursting with rich flavors, this French classic can easily become a favorite at your dinner table. Follow our best Dauphinoise potatoes recipe to learn how to make this scrumptious dish for your next event!

Ingredients:

– 1 kg (2.2 lb) potatoes, preferably waxy varieties like Yukon Gold or Desiree

– 300 ml (1¼ cups) heavy cream

– 200 ml (¾ cup + 2 tablespoons) milk

– 2 garlic cloves, minced

– ½ tsp ground nutmeg

– Salt and freshly ground black pepper

– Butter, for greasing the dish and topping the potatoes

– 100 g (1 cup) grated Gruyère or Comté cheese (optional)

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 160°C (320°F) and generously grease a medium-sized baking dish with butter.

2. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes using either a sharp knife or a mandoline. A consistent thickness of approximately 3 mm (⅛ inch) is ideal.

3. In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine the heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, ground nutmeg, salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.

4. Add the sliced potatoes to the saucepan, ensuring that each slice is thoroughly coated in the cream mixture.

5. Carefully transfer the coated potato slices into your greased baking dish, arranging them in even layers that overlap slightly.

6. Pour any remaining cream mixture evenly over the layered potatoes in the baking dish.

7. For an optional yet delicious addition, sprinkle the grated Gruyère or Comté cheese on top of the potatoes.

8. Place small pieces of butter over the top of your dish before transferring it to your preheated oven.

9. Bake the Dauphinoise potatoes for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbling.

10. Remove from the oven and let stand for around 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy your homemade Dauphinoise potatoes as a delightful side dish to any meat or vegetarian main course!

In no time, you’ll be impressing your family and friends with this mouthwatering French classic. With its creamy and rich texture, Dauphinoise potatoes bring a touch of elegance to any dining table. Bon appétit!
