Introduction:

Banh Mi is a classic Vietnamese sandwich beloved worldwide for its distinctive flavors and hearty ingredients. Its deliciousness lies in the perfect balance of savory meats, tangy pickled vegetables, and crusty French baguette. In this article, we will explore the best classic Banh Mi recipe that will enable you to make this scrumptious sandwich at home with ease.

Ingredients:

For the sandwich:

– 1 French baguette (approximately 24 inches long)

– ½ pound thinly sliced pork tenderloin (or other cold cuts)

– ¼ cup mayonnaise

– 2 tablespoons pâté (preferably liver pâté)

– 1 medium cucumber, thinly sliced lengthwise

– 1 jalapeño or spicy chili pepper, thinly sliced (optional)

– Fresh cilantro

– Salt and pepper to taste

For the pickled vegetables:

– 1 cup julienned daikon radish

– 1 cup julienned carrots

– 2 teaspoons sugar

– ½ teaspoon salt

– ¾ cup rice vinegar

Instructions:

Preparing the pickled vegetables:

1. In a large bowl, combine the julienned daikon radish and carrots.

2. In a separate small bowl, mix sugar and salt together and sprinkle over the vegetables.

3. Gently massage the sugar-salt mixture into the vegetables until they start to soften slightly.

4. Add rice vinegar to the bowl of vegetables, ensure that they are well coated.

5. Set aside for one hour or overnight in an airtight container for better flavor infusion.

Preparing the sandwich:

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).

2. Slice the baguette horizontally but not all the way through, creating an opening like a book.

3. Heat the bread in the oven for 8-10 minutes until crispy and golden brown.

4. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.

5. Spread a generous layer of mayonnaise on one side of the baguette, and pâté on the other side.

6. Add a layer of thinly sliced pork tenderloin, followed by pickled vegetables, cucumber slices, and jalapeño (if desired) on one side of the baguette.

7. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves, adding salt and pepper to taste.

8. Close the sandwich by folding over the other side of the baguette.

9. Slice into portions and serve immediately.

Conclusion:

The Classic Banh Mi sandwich is an explosion of flavors that perfectly balances sweet, tangy, rich, and spicy elements. With this easy recipe at hand, you can now enjoy a delicious homemade Banh Mi anytime you crave it or share this tasty delight with your friends and family. Happy cooking!
