Introduction

French toast has long been a favorite breakfast dish, but bruleed French toast takes it to a whole new level of indulgence. With its caramelized sugar crust atop soft, custard-soaked bread, this elevated version of classic French toast is perfect for special occasions or simply elevating your weekend brunch game. In this article, we’ll share the best bruleed French toast recipe and offer helpful tips on how to make it to perfection.

Ingredients

– 8 thick slices of brioche or challah bread

– 6 large eggs

– 1 1/2 cups heavy cream

– 1/2 cup whole milk

– 1/2 cup granulated sugar

– 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

– 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

– Zest of one lemon (optional)

– Unsalted butter for greasing the pan

– Toppings: maple syrup, fresh berries, whipped cream (optional)

For the sugar topping:

– 1/2 cup granulated sugar

– Kitchen torch or broiler for caramelizing sugar

Instructions

1. Slice the bread into eight approximately one-inch thick pieces. Set aside.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until smooth and fully combined.

3. Prepare a large baking dish by lining it with parchment paper or greasing it with butter. Place the bread slices into the dish in a single layer.

4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices, making sure they are well coated. Allow the slices to sit for at least 30 minutes, occasionally turning them over to ensure even soaking.

5. While the bread is soaking, preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).

6. In a large non-stick skillet, melt about one tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Brown each slice of soaked bread for about 2 minutes per side, until golden brown. Add more butter as needed when frying additional slices.

7. Place the browned slices back into the baking dish in a single layer. Transfer the dish to the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the center is set and no longer liquid.

8. Remove the cooked French toast from the oven and let it cool down for a few minutes. Meanwhile, increase the oven temperature to broil.

9. Sprinkle a thin layer of granulated sugar evenly over each slice of French toast. Place the dish back into the oven on the highest rack, and broil for 2-3 minutes or until sugar caramelizes and becomes bubbly. Watch closely to avoid burning.

10. Let the Bruleed French Toast cool for a couple of minutes before serving. Plate with your favorite toppings such as fresh fruit, powdered sugar, whipped cream, or maple syrup, and enjoy!

With this best Bruleed French Toast recipe in hand, you can create an indulgent and sophisticated breakfast that will surely be adored by all who taste it. It’s not only easy to make but also perfect for special occasions or a cozy weekend brunch with family and friends. Happy cooking!
