Best Blackberry Jam Recipe – How To Make Blackberry Jam

Blackberry jam is a delightful, flavorsome treat that captures the essence of summer in a jar. Bursting with sweet and tangy flavors, this homemade jam is perfect for spreading on toast, adding to yogurt, or even baking into your favorite dessert. In this article, we’ll explore the best blackberry jam recipe and guide you through the process of making delicious blackberry jam from scratch.

Ingredients:

– 4 cups fresh blackberries

– 2 cups granulated sugar

– 1 tablespoon lemon juice

– 1/2 teaspoon butter (optional, to help reduce foaming)

Equipment:

– Large saucepan

– Wooden spoon

– 4 8oz sterilized canning jars with lids and bands

– Canning funnel

– Jar lifter

Instructions:

1. Prepare the blackberries: Rinse the blackberries gently under cold water and let them drain in a colander. Once drained, remove any stems or leaves that may still be attached to the berries.

2. Begin cooking: In a large saucepan, combine the prepared blackberries and sugar over medium heat. Stir frequently to prevent the sugar from burning and ensure that it’s well incorporated into the fruit.

3. Add lemon juice: After about five minutes of cooking and stirring, add the lemon juice to the saucepan and mix well. The lemon juice not only adds a subtle tanginess but also aids in preserving the jam.

4. Monitor temperature: Continue to cook the berry mixture on medium heat, periodically stirring to prevent sticking or scorching. The jam will start to thicken as it cooks; ideally, it should reach around 220°F (104°C) on a candy thermometer.

5. Include butter: If your jam is beginning to produce excessive foam that doesn’t subside while stirring, add the optional 1/2 teaspoon of butter. This will help reduce foaming without altering the flavor.

6. Test for doneness: To determine if your blackberry jam is ready, place a small amount of jam onto a chilled plate or spoon and let it cool for a moment. If it coats the surface evenly and wrinkles slightly when pushed with your finger, it’s done.

7. Fill jars: Use a canning funnel to carefully ladle the hot blackberry jam into sterilized jars, leaving 1/4-inch headspace. Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean cloth to ensure a proper seal.

8. Seal and process: Place the lids on top of the jars, then secure the bands until just finger-tight. Use a jar lifter to lower the filled jars into a boiling water bath, ensuring they are covered by at least one inch of water. Process in the boiling water for 10 minutes.

9. Cool and store: Carefully remove the jars from the boiling water bath using your jar lifter and let them cool undisturbed on a towel or cooling rack for at least 12 hours. Once cooled, check that the lids have sealed by pressing down on the center; if it doesn’t move, they are sealed properly. Label and store in a cool, dark place for up to one year.

Indulge in this delicious homemade blackberry jam recipe that celebrates the natural sweetness and tanginess of fresh blackberries. Whether you’re an experienced home canner or trying your hand at jam-making for the first time, this recipe is an excellent way to savor summer’s bounty all year long.
