As technology advances, there are more and more apps available for our smartphones that can help us identify and learn about the world around us. One area where this is particularly useful is in identifying bugs and insects. With the prevalence of smartphones, it is now easier than ever to identify the creepy crawlies we come across in our daily lives.

Here are some of the top apps available on iPhone for identifying bugs and insects:

  1. iNaturalist: iNaturalist is a free app that allows users to document and share observations of the natural world, including insects. Users can upload photos and receive suggestions for identifications from the app’s community of experts. In addition to identifying insects, iNaturalist also tracks your observations over time, making it a great tool for monitoring changes in local insect populations.
  2. BugGuide: BugGuide is a comprehensive guide to North American insects and arachnids. With a searchable database of over 70,000 images, this app can help identify virtually any bug you encounter. Users can also submit their own photos for identification by experts.
  3. Insect Identifier: Insect Identifier is a free app that uses image recognition technology to help identify bugs and insects. Users simply take a photo of the bug they want to identify, and the app uses machine learning algorithms to provide a species identification. This app is great for beginners who are just getting started with insect identification.
  4. Caterpillar Identification: This app is specifically designed to help identify caterpillars. With a database of over 1400 species, users can easily identify the caterpillar they have found by answering a few simple questions about its characteristics.
  5. Mosquito Bite Prevention: While not specifically an identification app, this app can help you identify and prevent mosquito bites. With information on mosquito biology and behavior, as well as tips for avoiding bites, this app is a must-have for anyone who spends time outdoors.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
