Is the Hola VPN Chrome Extension Safe to Use?

Hola VPN is a popular VPN service that offers a free browser extension for Google Chrome. The extension is designed to help users access content that is restricted in their region by routing their internet connection through a different country. This might sound like a good idea, but users have raised concerns about the safety and privacy of using the Hola VPN Chrome extension.

The primary issue with the Hola VPN Chrome extension is that it doesn’t use a traditional VPN infrastructure. Instead of routing user traffic through a private network of servers, Hola routes traffic through its users’ computers. Essentially, when you use the Hola VPN Chrome extension, your computer is used as a node in the network, allowing other users to route their traffic through your internet connection.

This architecture can have serious privacy implications. Firstly, you have no control over the traffic that is being routed through your computer. This could include anything from legitimate traffic to illegal activity such as hacking or piracy. If law enforcement were to identify one of these activities as originating from your IP address, you could be held accountable.

Secondly, Hola is known to collect a substantial amount of data about its users. The company claims that this data is necessary to maintain the service and improve its performance. However, it’s unclear exactly what data is being collected and how it’s being used. This could represent a significant privacy risk for users.

Finally, Hola has a history of being involved in shady practices. In 2015, it was discovered that Hola was selling the bandwidth of its users’ computers to other companies to allow them to conduct large-scale botnet attacks. This was a clear violation of user trust and demonstrated that Hola was willing to use its users’ computers for profit, without their knowledge or consent.
