When it comes to car audio systems, the head unit is a vital component. Often referred to as the “brain” of the system, the head unit is responsible for controlling your vehicle’s audio features. There are many factors to consider when purchasing a head unit, including size. Here’s how to buy the right size head unit for your car.

1. Check the Dash Size

The first step in choosing the right size head unit is to measure your dashboard. There are standard dash sizes, so you may have to do some research to figure out which size yours is. This information can be found in your vehicle’s manual or by searching online.

Once you know the size of your car’s dash, you can choose a head unit that fits it properly. Most head units come in two standard sizes: Single DIN and Double DIN. Single DIN units are the most common and are typically 2 inches tall by 7 inches wide. Double DIN units are twice the height, measuring 4 inches tall by 7 inches wide.

2. Consider Your Car’s Year and Model

The size of your car’s head unit may be influenced by the make and model of your vehicle. Some car manufacturers design their dashboards with specific head unit sizes in mind. In certain cases, you may have limited options when it comes to choosing a head unit that fits.

If you have a newer car, it may also have a touch screen display that controls more than just your audio system. These displays may require a larger head unit size to fit all the necessary controls. Some older cars may have a less common dash size, making it harder to find a head unit that will fit.

3. Think About the Features You Want

The size of a head unit isn’t the only thing to consider when purchasing one. You should also think about the features you want your unit to have. For example, some units have a CD player or a USB port for external devices. You may also want to consider units with Bluetooth connectivity so you can stream music from your phone.

If you want a lot of features and functionality, you may need a larger head unit to accommodate everything. However, this isn’t always the case, as many manufacturers are producing more compact head units with advanced features.

4. Consider Professional Installation

If you’re not confident in your ability to install a head unit yourself, you may want to consider professional installation. Car audio specialists can help you choose the right size head unit and install it properly, ensuring it fits correctly and all of its features work as intended.

In Conclusion

Choosing the right size head unit for your car can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. By measuring your car’s dash, considering your car’s make and model, thinking about the features you need, and possibly seeking professional installation, you can find the perfect head unit for your car that meets all your audio needs.
