As a professional or a student, you may often have to create presentations that require you to use images with transparent backgrounds. Transparent backgrounds are particularly useful when creating collages, infographics, logos, or any other visual that you want to embed in a larger project. However, creating a transparent background image can be a tricky process, especially if you’re new to design software. Fortunately, Microsoft PowerPoint provides you with an easy and straightforward way to do so.

Here’s how you can make an image background transparent in PowerPoint:

Step 1: Insert the image

In PowerPoint, open a new slide, and navigate to the “Insert” tab from the top menu. Click on “Pictures” and then select the image you want to edit. Once you’ve selected the image, click on “Insert” to add it to the slide.

Step 2: Select the image

Click on the image to select it. You’ll know that the image is selected because its border will become thick and solid.

Step 3: Navigate to the “Format” Image tool

With the image selected, navigate to the “Format” tab from the top menu.

Step 4: Remove the background

Under the “Format” tab, click on the “Remove Background” button. You’ll see a new “Background Removal” tab will appear on the ribbon at the top of the screen.

Step 5: Mark areas to keep

Under the “Background Removal” tab, you’ll see the “Mark Areas to Keep” and “Mark Areas to Remove” options. By default, the “Mark Areas to Remove” button is selected. Click and drag the cursor to make a box around the area(s) you want to keep. You may need to zoom in or out to ensure that you’ve marked everything you want to keep. PowerPoint will then automatically mark the area it thinks you want to remove.

Step 6: Preview the transparency

Click on the “Preview” button to get a preview of your image with transparency. If there are some parts that still need to be adjusted, drag the “Mark Areas to Remove” (red/pink) line over the area you want to remove.

Step 7: Save the image

Once you’re happy with the result, click on “Keep Changes” under the “Background Removal” tab to save the image with transparency. You can then save the newly created image for use elsewhere.

Conclusion

Making an image background transparent in PowerPoint is a straightforward process. The “Remove Background” tool is a great feature that helps you to quickly edit images for your presentations or other design projects. With the steps outlined above, you should be able to create transparent images that meet your needs with relative ease.
