Email Harvesting Explained and How to Protect Yourself from It

Email harvesting is the practice of collecting email addresses from various sources such as websites, social media platforms, online directories, and other digital platforms. These harvested email addresses are usually used to create an email list for marketing campaigns, spamming or other malicious activities, and can be sold to third-party companies for profit.

To protect yourself from email harvesting, you can take the following steps:

1. Use a unique email address. Instead of using a common email address, create a unique email address for each website, social media account, or online directory you sign up for. This can help you track if your email address has been leaked or sold.

2. Be careful with your personal information. Avoid sharing your email address on public platforms or websites that you don’t trust. Consider using an alias email address instead of your real one.

3. Use a spam filter. A spam filter can help you identify and block unwanted emails, including spam.

4. Read privacy policies. When signing up for a new website or service, read the privacy policy to see how your personal information will be used, and be particularly wary of sites that do not have clear policies in place.

5. Use a secure email provider. Choose an email provider that has strong security measures in place to protect your data, such as encryption or two-factor authentication.

By following these steps, you can minimize your exposure to email harvesting and protect your personal and professional information.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
