Do you want to work as a teacher in the great state of Kentucky? If that’s the case, you have come to the correct place. A short article on the processes of becoming a teacher in Kentucky may be found below.

Step 1: Complete a Teacher Preparation Program that has been Approved

To teach in the United States, educators must have at least a bachelor’s degree. To gain certification in Kentucky, students must finish a state-approved teacher education program. Certification to teach elementary school (grades 1-6) in Kentucky necessitates the completion of courses in the subject areas taught in elementary school. Kentucky requires middle school (grades 5-9) teachers to have a major in one of the following subjects: English, math, social studies, or science, with a major equaling 30 semester hours of coursework. Educators in secondary schools (grades 8-12) must have a 30 semester-hour major. In Kentucky, supervised student instruction is also required. For further information, contact the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board. Online or on-site educator certification programs are available. On the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board’s website, you may find a list of recognized teacher education programs.

Step 2: Pass the Requisite Exams

Most states in the United States require tests to demonstrate proficiency in both fundamental abilities and your academic area. For fundamental abilities (needed for admittance into some teacher education programs), Kentucky employs the Pre Professional Skills Test (PPST), and for subject area competence, the Praxis II: Subject Exams and Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exams.

There are three levels of licensing in Kentucky:

Rank III: The provisional credential granted to new educators with an undergraduate degree.

Rank II: A master’s degree or at least 32 semester hours of graduate credit are required for rank II.

Rank I: 60 semesters of graduate credit, including a master’s degree, are required for Rank I.

Step 3: Complete an Application for a Kentucky Teaching Credential.

You can apply for teacher certification in Kentucky if you have completed your coursework and exam requirements. The Kentucky Certification Application may be found here. Section I should be completed and signed. Section II must be signed and completed by the superintendent of the school where you performed your student teaching experience. Section IV must be completed by the institution where you completed your teacher education program. Send your application to the Division of Certification, Education Professional Standards Board, 100 Airport Road, 3rd Floor, Frankfort, Kentucky 40601.
