Network Segmentation Boosts Wi-Fi Performance And Security For K-12 Schools

Many K-12 schools use network segmentation to boost their Wi-Fi performance and security. However, as we will mention later on in this article, there are plenty of other benefits to this architectural approach. 

If you do not know what network segmentation is, you have come to the right place. We will discuss everything that you need to know about this approach, including its definition, its many benefits, and how it can be used to boost Wi-Fi performance and network security. 

What Is Network Segmentation?

Network segmentation is a term used to describe an architectural approach that divides a specific network into various smaller segments or sections. There are multiple reasons schools and admin workers incorporate this approach into their network system. For example, it allows them to monitor what content students are viewing while on the network. 

Benefits Of Network Segmentation

As we have already mentioned, there are plenty of benefits to incorporating segmentation into a school’s network. A few of these benefits include:

  • It is easier to contain information and data.
  • Teachers and admin workers can provide better access control. This means that students will only be able to gain access to specific network resources. 
  • Teachers and admin workers can monitor the content viewed by students.
  • When an error or issue occurs, it can be contained to a specific section or segment of the network.
  • The school receives better network security.
  • Since fewer people are using each segment at a time, there is less traffic on the network. This allows for better Wi-Fi performance. 

How Does Network Segmentation Boost Wi-Fi Performance And Security For K-12 Schools

We now know that network segmentation allows for better Wi-Fi performance and security for K-12 schools. However, why does this occur?

If the school offers a singular network, there will be plenty of traffic from the students accessing the various sections. This will cause lagging and a slowed Wi-Fi performance. However, if there is segmentation, there will be less traffic on each section of the network. This boosts the Wi-Fi performance and allows the students to complete their tasks much quicker. 

More so, network segmentation can allow admin workers to deny certain users access to specific sections. Because of this, they can prevent unauthorized users from gaining access to sensitive content., such as personal records or financial documents. 

Concluding Thoughts

Many K-12 schools use network segmentation to boost their Wi-Fi performance and security. There are plenty of benefits to this architectural approach. For example, it is much easier to contain information and data with network segmentation. Teachers and admin workers can provide better access control. This means that students will only be able to gain access to specific network resources. 

More so, network segmentation allows schools to deny certain users access to sensitive content. This improves the school’s security as it reduces the threat of phishing, pharming, and other cyber attacks.
