Chili is a dish cherished for its heartiness, versatility, and the comfort it brings with every spoonful. It lends itself to personalization, and thus, finding the best upgrades can take its flavors and textures to new heights. Chefs from diverse culinary backgrounds have weighed in on their favorite additions and tweaks to make your bowl of chili stand out. Here are the 16 best upgrades for chili, according to professional chefs:

.Toast Your Spices – Before adding them to your pot, toast spices like cumin, coriander, and chili powder in a dry pan to intensify their flavors.

.Use Multiple Types of Chili Peppers – Incorporate a variety of fresh or dried chili peppers to add complexity and layers of heat.

.Add Chocolate or Cocoa Powder – A small amount can enrich the depth of flavor, adding an intriguing background note.

.Use Beer for Braising – Replace some of the broth with a dark beer to braise the meat; it adds a malty richness that water or stock cannot match.

.Incorporate Fresh Herbs at the End – Adding herbs like cilantro or parsley before serving preserves their brightness and offers a fresh contrast.

.Roast Fresh Vegetables – Roasted tomatoes or peppers add smokiness and intensity to your chili’s base.

.Stir in Vinegar or Citrus Juice after Cooking – A dash of vinegar or squeeze of lime can provide a much-needed balance to the dish’s richness.

.Mix in Stone-Ground Cornmeal or Masa Harina – A few tablespoons can thicken your chili while giving it a subtle corn flavor that complements other ingredients.

.Garnish with Crunchy Toppings – Offer toppings like chopped onions, radishes, or tortilla strips for added texture.

.Smoked Meats are King – Swap traditional ground beef with smoked brisket or pork shoulder for additional layers of smoky flavor.

.Try Exotic Meats – Game meats like bison or lamb can infuse novelty into your chili recipe with their distinct tastes.

.Include Savory Additions Like Coffee or Soy Sauce – Small amounts of strong savory or umami ingredients can intensify the overall flavor profile without overpowering it.

.Experiment with Global Spices – Look beyond traditional tex-mex spice mixes and incorporate spices from other cuisines such as garam masala for an international twist.

.Try Different Legumes or Hearty Grains – Lentils, chickpeas, barley, or farro can offer variation in texture and nutrition from the typical kidney bean.

.Finish with Cheese Curds for a Midwestern Twist – Soft cheese curds partially melt into the chili creating pockets of creamy goodness that contrast with its heartiness.

.Add Avocado for Creaminess and Nutrition – Cubes of avocado stirred in just before serving add healthy fats and a creamy texture that goes well with the robustness of chili.

Each chef’s tweak brings something new to the table—literally—augmenting traditional flavors while maintaining chili’s soul-warming essence. It’s clear that whether you’re looking for depth, heat, texture, or an altogether different flavor profile, there’s always room to explore within the world of chili enhancements.
