Introduction

Music is a universal language that brings people together, and introducing children to musical instruments at a young age can help develop their motor skills, creativity, and social connections. Drums are among the easiest instruments for children to begin learning, and you don’t have to break the bank by purchasing a professional drum set. In this article, we will explore three simple ways to make drums for kids using everyday household items.

1. Oatmeal Container Drums

Materials:

– Empty oatmeal containers (various sizes)

– Construction paper or scrapbooking paper

– Scissors

– Glue or tape

– Colored markers or crayons

– Drumsticks (wooden spoons or chopsticks)

Instructions:

1. Clean out the empty oatmeal containers.

2. Measure and cut the construction paper or scrapbooking paper to fit around each container.

3. Glue or tape the paper onto the containers.

4. Encourage your child to personalize their drums by decorating them with markers or crayons.

5. Use wooden spoons or chopsticks as drumsticks.

2. Balloon Skin Bongo Drums

Materials:

– Two empty cans (such as coffee cans) without lids

– Large balloons

– Scissors

– Duct tape or wide masking tape

– Drumsticks (wooden spoons or chopsticks)

Instructions:

1. Clean out the empty cans and remove any sharp edges.

2. Cut off the neck of the balloons and stretch them over the open side of the cans.

3. Secure the balloons in place with duct tape or wide masking tape around the sides of the cans.

4. Place both cans side by side to create a bongo drum effect.

5. Use wooden spoons or chopsticks as drumsticks.

3. Plastic Bucket Drums

Materials:

– Plastic buckets (various sizes)

– Drumsticks (wooden spoons or dowel rods)

Instructions:

1. Clean the plastic buckets and make sure they are dry.

2. Turn the buckets upside down, creating a drumming surface on the bottom.

3. Use wooden spoons or dowel rods as drumsticks.

Conclusion

Getting children involved in music can have numerous cognitive, physical, and social benefits. Furthermore, creating homemade drums with your child can be a fun bonding experience that allows them to express their artistic side. By using these three simple methods to make drums for kids, you can open up the world of rhythm and percussion without a hefty price tag. Encourage your child to create unique beats and tunes with their new drums – who knows, you might just have a budding musician in your midst!
