4 Easy Ways to Deal with Raccoons Humanely

Introduction:

Raccoons can cause considerable damage to your property, especially if they find a way to make your home their own. However, it is crucial to know that killing raccoons is both illegal and inhumane. To keep your property safe without causing harm to wildlife, consider these four easy ways to deal with raccoons.

1. Eliminate Food Sources:

The primary reason raccoons choose a location is easy access to food sources. To deter these creatures from your property, ensure you keep food sources out of reach. Secure trash cans with locking lids or bungee cords. Clean up fallen fruits and vegetables from your yard, and do not leave pet food outside.

2. Make Your Property Unappealing:

Raccoons are attracted to clutter and potential nesting spots. Keep the exterior of your property clean by removing brush piles, leaf litter, woodpiles, or any potential den sites that could attract raccoons. Additionally, close off any points of entry into your house with wire mesh or heavy-duty materials.

3. Use Repellents:

Several natural or chemical repellents are available on the market that can deter raccoons from entering your property. Sprinkle ammonia-soaked rags around areas they frequent or apply commercial raccoon repellents containing capsaicin (the active ingredient in peppers) or predator urine extracts.

4. Relocation:

If a raccoon has already set up residence on your property, consider live trapping and relocation as a last resort option. Purchase a human-sized live trap from a hardware store or borrow one from local animal control agencies. Place the trap in an area where the raccoon frequently visits, and bait it with marshmallows or peanut butter—two of their favorite foods. Once trapped, transport the animal to a designated relocation site far away from residential areas and release it.

Conclusion:

Dealing with raccoons on your property can be frustrating. However, it is essential to approach the situation humanely and responsibly. By using these four tips, you can effectively discourage raccoons from invading your space while ensuring their safety and wellbeing. Remember to check for local laws and regulations before attempting any trapping or relocation efforts.
