As a proud owner of an Amazon Echo device, you already know how convenient and helpful it can be to have access to hands-free technology that can do everything from order pizza to play your favorite song with a simple voice command. But did you know that Alexa, the AI assistant powering the Echo, has an ever-expanding library of skills that can make your life even easier? And the best part? Many of these skills are free! Here are some of the best free Alexa skills every Echo owner should know about.

1. TED Talks: If you’re a fan of the TED Talks online video series, you’ll be happy to know that the TED Talks skill lets you listen to inspiring and informative talks on a variety of subjects, including science, technology, and design. Just say “Alexa, open TED Talks” and you’re ready to go.

2. Sleep and Relaxation Sounds: Trouble falling asleep? This skill can play soothing sounds and music, like ocean waves or rainfall, to help lull you into a peaceful slumber. Just say “Alexa, open Sleep Sounds” and start drifting off.

3. Ambient Sounds: Similar to Sleep and Relaxation Sounds, this skill offers a wider variety of background noises to help you focus, meditate, or simply relax. From a crackling fire to a bustling coffee shop, you can customize your auditory experience with this skill. Say “Alexa, open Ambient Sounds” and choose your preferred sound.

4. Recipe Helper: If you’re looking for dinner ideas, the Recipe Helper skill can help. Simply tell Alexa what type of dish you want, like “chicken curry” or “vegetarian lasagna,” and the skill will suggest recipes from top food blogs and websites. Say “Alexa, ask Recipe Helper for a vegan smoothie recipe” and choose from the options.

5. Animal Sounds: This skill is fun for children and adults alike. Simply say “Alexa, ask Animal Sounds what a lion sounds like” and hear a realistic roar. You can play sounds from a variety of animals, from domestic pets to exotic creatures.

6. Astronomy Picture of the Day: This skill provides daily updates on NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day, including a high-resolution image and a brief explanation from a professional astronomer. Just say “Alexa, open Astronomy Picture of the Day” and learn something new about the cosmos.

7. Quote of the Day: Need a little inspiration or motivation? The Quote of the Day skill can provide you with daily quotes from famous authors, thinkers, and leaders. Say “Alexa, open Quote of the Day” and enjoy a wise word.

8. Jeopardy!: Who doesn’t love a good game of trivia? This skill lets you play a round of the classic TV game show Jeopardy! with family and friends. Just say “Alexa, play Jeopardy!” and see how many questions you can answer correctly.

These free Alexa skills are just the tip of the iceberg. With thousands of skills available, there’s never been a better time to explore what Alexa can do. Whether you’re looking for entertainment, education, or just a little help with your daily routine, Alexa has something for everyone. Try out these skills and discover even more ways to make your Echo device even more useful and convenient.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
