9 Ways to Cut Your Own Long Hair

Cutting your own long hair may seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and techniques, it’s easier than you might think. Save time and money by learning how to give yourself a trim or even a full haircut at home. Here are nine ways to cut your own long hair.

1. Gather the necessary tools

To start, make sure you have sharp hair scissors, a comb, hair clips, and a spray bottle of water. Having the right tools will ensure a hassle-free cutting experience.

2. Trim your hair in sections

Begin by sectioning off your hair into four main parts: top, back, and both sides. Use hair clips to keep each section separate. Cutting one section at a time will help you achieve an even haircut.

3. Taper the ends

To create a natural-looking tapered effect, hold each section of hair at an angle and snip diagonally rather than straight across. This technique will give volume and movement to your layers.

4. Try the ponytail method for an easy layered cut

If you’re a newbie at cutting your own hair, try the ponytail method for creating layers. Simply brush all of your hair into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic band. Cut off the desired length from the end of the ponytail to create natural layers.

5. Use point cutting for soft edges

Instead of making blunt cuts across your strands, try point cutting for softer edges that blend easily. Hold each section of hair between your fingers and snip into it at an angle so that you’re left with gentle tapered ends.

6. Create face-framing layers

If you’d like to add face-framing layers to accentuate your features, focus on cutting shorter layers around your face while keeping longer ones towards the back of your head.

7. Test out bangs

Bangs can dramatically change your look, so when cutting them, start with longer pieces first and gradually adjust until you achieve your desired length. Keep the scissors angled for a softer finish.

8. Practice the twist technique

Another method for creating layers is by twisting a section of hair and snipping the ends. This technique produces uneven layers, giving your hair a more voluminous appearance.

9. Double-check your handiwork

Finally, make sure to check for evenness and stray hairs. Comb through your hair and hold mirrors in front of you and behind to ensure an even cut all around.

With these nine techniques under your belt, you’ll be a pro at cutting your own long hair in no time. Remember to start slowly, practice often, and soon you’ll be able to create stylish cuts without ever leaving home!
