How to Play Okey
Okey is a popular Turkish tile-based game enjoyed by players all around the world. The game, derived from Rummikub, is played with a set of 106 tiles and combines elements of strategy and luck. If you’re interested in learning how to play Okey, this beginner’s guide will take you through the essentials and get you started on your journey to becoming an expert player.
1. Gather the necessary equipment
To play Okey, you will need a set of 106 tiles: 104 numbered tiles and 2 joker tiles. These tiles come in four colors (red, black, blue, and green) with numbers ranging from 1 to 13. The two joker tiles typically have no color or number on them.
2. Set the table
Arrange all the numbered tiles face down on the playing surface and mix them thoroughly. Next, form 21 stacks of tiles – each containing five tiles – which will serve as the playing board. These stacks need to be placed in a circle facing down, leaving space in the center for a discard pile.
3. Choose the dealer
Each player draws one tile from the tile pool to determine who becomes the dealer. The player with the highest-numbered tile assumes this role; however, if two or more players have equally high numbers, they draw again until one person acquires the highest tile.
4. Deal the tiles
The dealer distributes 14 tiles to each player starting from their right side and moving counterclockwise around the table. Players should arrange their dealt tiles according to color and number combinations in their rack.
5. Determine the joker tile
To determine which numbered tile assumes the joker role, reveal an additional tile – referred to as the ‘indicator tile’ – which can be obtained from an unassigned stack. The numbered tile that directly succeeds this indicator tile serves as the joker for that specific game (for example, if the indicator tile is a green 4, then the green 5 is the joker).
6. Play the game
Okey is played counterclockwise, beginning with the player to the dealer’s right. On each player’s turn, they draw one tile from either the designated stack or discard pile.
The aim of Okey is to form sets of three or four tiles – referred to as ‘melds’ – which can include runs (consecutive numbers in the same color) or groups (identical numbers in different colors). Players are allowed to rearrange their tiles as much as needed during their turn but must ensure that they pass one tile on to the next player before ending their round.
7. Scoring points
The first player to form valid melds using all their tiles and place them on a board declares a win. Players can earn bonus points if their winning hand includes joker tiles that have been used in melds or if they have not drawn from the discard pile throughout the game.
8. Ending and starting a new game
Upon completion of a game, players can elect a new dealer, and gameplay proceeds with another round. The overall winner is determined after several rounds, often decided by obtaining a specific number of points or victories.
With this beginner’s guide, you’ll soon be understanding and enjoying playing Okey like a seasoned pro! Remember that practice makes perfect; engage in multiple games and experiment with strategic moves as you develop your skills in this stimulating and entertaining game.
