In the age of technology, iPhone users have a myriad of apps at their fingertips for virtually any activity, and hiking is no exception. Whether you’re an avid hiker looking to tackle new trails or a casual walker seeking scenic routes, the following six hiking apps are some of the best available on the iPhone to enhance your outdoor adventures.

1.AllTrails: With over 100,000 trails mapped out, AllTrails is one of the most popular hiking apps among outdoor enthusiasts. Users can search for trails based on difficulty, length, and rating. The app also features downloadable maps for offline use and a function to record your hike as you go.

2.Gaia GPS: Highly valued by more serious hikers and even search and rescue teams, Gaia GPS offers detailed topographic maps, including U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Forest Service maps. It allows users to download maps for offline use and provides extensive tools for planning routes.

3.Komoot: Komoot offers route planning combined with voice navigation which makes it easier to enjoy your hike without constantly checking the map. It’s great not only for hiking but also biking and running trails. It includes topographic maps and the ability to plan your hike down to very specific details such as surface type.

4.PeakVisor: PeakVisor is an app that uses your iPhone’s camera to identify the names of mountains and peaks in real-time using augmented reality. This is a great education tool as well as a cool way to impress your fellow hikers on the trail.

5.ViewRanger: Offering similar features to other hiking apps like trail searches, downloadable maps, and offline GPS navigation, what sets ViewRanger apart is its Skyline feature which identifies over 9 million points of interest across the world using your camera’s viewfinder.

6.TrailLink by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy: For those interested in exploring converted railway tracks that have been turned into trails, TrailLink is the perfect app with detailed information on rail-trails across the country. It comes with photos, reviews, and robust map features even in areas with poor cell service.

Each of these apps offers unique features intended to enhance your hiking experience in different ways – from helping you select suitable hikes to ensuring you never lose your way while immersing yourself in nature’s wonders right through your iPhone screen.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
