5 Ways to Dry Oregano

Oregano is a popular herb commonly used in various dishes for its aromatic flavor. It not only enhances the taste of food, but it’s also packed with numerous health benefits due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. To preserve its flavor and store it for an extended period, you can dry oregano using various methods. Here are 5 ways to do just that!

1. Air Drying

Air drying is one of the simplest and most traditional ways to dry oregano. All you need is a warm, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.

– First, harvest your oregano by snipping its stems at the base.

– Next, tie bundles of about 4-8 stems together.

– Hang these bundles upside down in the designated drying area.

– After 7-10 days, check if the leaves are crispy and break away easily when crushed. If so, they are ready to use.

2. Oven Drying

Oven drying is another easy method when it comes to drying oregano. It takes less time than air drying but requires monitoring to prevent overheating.

– Preheat your oven to its lowest temperature setting (usually around 180°F or 80°C).

– Spread a layer of washed and dry oregano leaves on a baking sheet.

– Place the sheet in your preheated oven and leave the door slightly ajar to allow moisture to escape.

– Stir every 5 minutes to promote even drying.

– After 20-30 minutes, check if the leaves have dried completely and let them cool.

3. Microwave Drying

If you’re in a rush, microwaving your oregano will give you quick results.

– Place washed and dry oregano leaves flat between sheets of paper towels.

– Microwave on high power for about 30 seconds.

– Open your microwave to check if the leaves have turned dry and brittle. If not, continue microwaving in 10-second intervals.

4. Dehydrator Drying

A food dehydrator provides the most controlled method to dry oregano.

– Spread a single layer of oregano leaves on your dehydrator’s trays.

– Set your dehydrator to 95°F (35°C) and allow the process to run for 4-6 hours or until the leaves are crispy and crack easily.

– Once done, remove the dried oregano from the dehydrator and let it cool before storing.

5. Sun Drying

Sun drying is ideal if you have large quantities of oregano to dry and live in an area with a hot, dry climate.

– Lay your washed and dry oregano leaves on screens or drying racks.

– Place the racks outside in direct sunlight during midday hours when temperatures are at their highest.

– Turn the leaves several times per day to ensure uniform drying.

– Once fully dried, store your oregano in an airtight container.

Whichever method you choose, be sure to store your dried oregano in airtight containers away from heat and light sources. This will prolong its flavor and potency for up to two years. Enjoy the beautifully preserved taste of your home-dried oregano in various meals!
