3 Ways to Kill Creeping Charlie

Creeping Charlie, or Glechoma hederacea, is a persistent and fast-growing ground ivy that can quickly take over your yard if not controlled. This invasive plant spreads rapidly through stolons, covering vast areas and competing with other plants for nutrients, water, and sunlight. If left unchecked, it can ruin your lawn, flower beds, and garden spaces. Fear not, as we have compiled a list of three effective ways to kill Creeping Charlie and reclaim your landscape.

1. Hand Pulling Method

The most straightforward method of getting rid of this stubborn green invader is by hand pulling. This process works best for mild infestations or after you have already treated the area with an herbicide. To ensure success in removing Creeping Charlie:

– Water the soil to make it easier to pull the plant out with its roots.

– Grip the main stems firmly near the base of the plant.

– Gradually pull out the Creeping Charlie while trying to avoid breaking its roots off.

– Discard the pulled plant in a plastic bag to prevent it from re-rooting into another area.

Keep in mind that this process may take time and multiple attempts to eradicate Creeping Charlie completely.

2. Utilizing Herbicides

Applying selective or non-selective herbicides can be another effective way of killing Creeping Charlie. Selective herbicides target specific plants while leaving other vegetation unharmed. Look for herbicides with active ingredients such as triclopyr or dicamba.

Non-selective herbicides will kill all plants they come into contact with and should be used with caution. Glyphosate-based products are particularly potent against Creeping Charlie.

To increase efficiency:

– Apply herbicides on a sunny day when there is no rain forecasted.

– Spray on actively growing plants during spring or fall when temperatures are between 60-80°F (15-27°C).

– Follow all application guidelines and safety precautions on the product label.

3. Cultural Control and Maintenance Practices

The key to long-term success in controlling Creeping Charlie lies in maintaining a healthy lawn. Implement the following practices to suppress the growth of this ground ivy:

– Mow your lawn regularly to maintain the recommended height for your grass type.

– Fertilize and water your lawn appropriately, promoting strong grass growth.

– Overseed any thin or bare patches of lawn to reduce available space for Creeping Charlie to grow.

– Avoid overwatering or poorly drained areas, as these conditions are favorable for the weed’s growth.

By employing these methods and maintaining a healthy lawn, you can eliminate Creeping Charlie from your yard and keep it looking lush and beautiful. Always remember that diligence and consistency are crucial in combating invasive plants.
