3 Ways to Increase Milk Supply in One Breast

Introduction:

Breastfeeding is an essential part of motherhood, providing essential nutrients and health benefits for both mom and baby. However, some mothers may experience an unequal milk supply between both breasts, which could lead to issues such as engorgement, lopsided breasts, or discomfort. Here are three methods to help increase milk supply in one breast and balance it out.

1. Frequent nursing and expressing sessions:

One effective way to increase milk supply in a single breast is to nurse or pump more frequently on the side that seems to produce less milk. This increased stimulation will signal your body to produce more milk in that particular breast. Try alternating starting sides during feeding sessions, ensuring the under-producing breast is used first at least half the time. Moreover, after nursing or pumping from both breasts, switch back to the less productive side for an additional couple of minutes to encourage more production.

2. Adjust your breastfeeding position:

Making slight changes to your breastfeeding position can improve the overall latch and help your baby transfer milk more effectively. As a result, this will help even out the milk supply in both breasts. Experiment with different positions, such as the cradle hold, football hold, or side-lying position while paying particular attention to ensuring your baby has a deep latch on the lower producing breast. If you continue experiencing problems achieving a proper latch with your baby on one side, consider seeking guidance from a lactation consultant.

3. Utilize breast compressions:

Breast compression is a simple yet effective method that stimulates milk flow by applying gentle pressure on the breast. This technique helps ensure more hindmilk (the high-fat content milk) is transferred to your baby while also promoting increased production in that breast over time. To perform breast compressions during nursing or pumping session:

– Ensure that your baby has latched on properly

– Wait for your baby to begin sucking and swallowing

– Use your free hand to gently press and squeeze the breast

– Release when your baby stops swallowing, and then repeat the process

In conclusion, addressing uneven milk supply between breasts is important, both for the mother’s comfort and ensuring proper nourishment for the baby. Frequent nursing, adjusting breastfeeding positions, and utilizing breast compressions are three methods that can effectively help increase milk supply in one breast. Lastly, seeking professional assistance from a lactation consultant may provide personalized guidance based on your specific concerns.
