3 Ways to Hide Wall Flaws with Textured Paint

Wall imperfections can be hard to ignore and detract from the overall aesthetic of your living space. If you’ve tried everything to smooth over wall flaws but still aren’t satisfied, textured paint could be the solution you’ve been searching for. Textured paint allows for creative ways to hide and minimize unattractive marks on your walls, giving them a revamped and stylish look. Here, we highlight three easy ways to conceal wall imperfections using textured paint.

1. Create a Sand Finish

One way to conceal wall flaws is by applying a sand-textured finish. Sand texture paint is composed of fine sand particles mixed with either latex or oil-based paint. The result is subtle yet effective in disguising minor imperfections, such as shallow dents and ridges.

To achieve this look, start by preparing your walls by cleaning and priming them. Next, mix the sand-textured paint according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply the mixed paint evenly using a roller or brush starting from one corner of the wall and working your way across. The fine sand particles will help create a visually intriguing finish that camouflages any unsightly blemishes on your walls while adding depth and character.

2. Apply a Knockdown Texture

Knockdown texture is another popular method used to cover wall flaws. It involves rolling on textured paint (usually premixed) in random patterns and then using a trowel or drywall knife to “knock down” the raised areas, creating an attractive, irregular surface.

To begin, prepare your walls by cleaning and priming them as needed. Roll on the knockdown texture paint in a random pattern, ensuring even coverage across the entire wall. After allowing it to set for the time recommended by the manufacturer (typically around 10-15 minutes), use a trowel or drywall knife held at an angle to knock down the texture. This will create a unique, visually appealing surface that can successfully hide wall imperfections while adding interest to your space.

3. Try a Venetian Plaster Technique

The Venetian plaster technique can elevate the look of your walls by imitating the worn, weathered appearance of an ancient European building while simultaneously hiding unsightly flaws.

First, prepare and prime your walls as necessary. Mix joint compound with latex paint in a ratio of four parts compound to one part paint. The addition of paint will not only provide color to the mixture, but it will also make it easier to apply and give it a smoother consistency. Use a trowel or spatula to apply the mixture in thin layers, allowing each layer to dry fully before applying another. The irregular layers and color variations will produce an elegant finish that distracts from any wall imperfections.

In conclusion, textured paint offers a wealth of possibilities for hiding wall flaws and adding a touch of sophistication to your living space. By experimenting with different techniques like sand finishes, knockdown textures, and Venetian plasters, you can transform your walls into stunning masterpieces that leave no trace of their imperfect pasts.
