3 Ways to Freeze Basil

Introduction:

Basil is a highly aromatic and delicious herb that can transform an ordinary dish into a culinary masterpiece. However, it can be challenging to keep basil fresh for an extended period. Freezing basil is an excellent way to preserve its vibrant color and flavor for future use. In this article, we will explore three methods to freeze basil effectively.

1. Freezing Whole Basil Leaves:

The simplest way to freeze basil is by freezing the whole leaves individually. Follow these easy steps:

1. Begin by gently rinsing the basil leaves under cool water and patting them dry with a clean paper towel.

2. Spread out the leaves in a single layer on a baking sheet or tray covered with parchment paper.

3. Place the tray in the freezer until the leaves are completely frozen (usually takes about an hour).

4. Once frozen, transfer the leaves into an airtight container or ziplock freezer bag, removing as much air as possible before sealing.

5. Label the container with the date and store it in the freezer for up to six months. Use the frozen basil leaves directly from the freezer without thawing for maximum flavor in your dishes.

2. Freezing Basil in Ice Cube Trays:

Freezing basil in ice cube trays allows you to easily add a burst of flavor to your recipes without defrosting a whole bunch of leaves at once. Here’s how:

1. Chop clean basil leaves finely or leave them whole, depending on your preference.

2. Distribute the chopped or whole leaves evenly into the compartments of an ice cube tray.

3. Gently pour water or olive oil over the leaves until they are covered.

4. Place the tray in the freezer until the cubes are completely frozen.

5. Once frozen, pop them out of the tray and transfer them to a ziplock freezer bag or airtight container.

6. Label the bag or container with the date and contents, then store it in the freezer for up to six months. Drop the frozen cubes directly into your recipes as needed.

3. Freezing Basil Pesto:

Transform your fresh basil into a delicious pesto that can be easily frozen and used later. Here’s a basic pesto recipe:

1. In a food processor, blend 2 cups of clean, fresh basil leaves, 1/3 cup of pine nuts, 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, 2 cloves of minced garlic, and a pinch of salt and pepper.

2. While the food processor is running, slowly drizzle in about 1/2 cup of good-quality olive oil.

3. Once well-blended, transfer the pesto into small containers or ice cube trays for portioning.

4. Cover the surface of the pesto with a thin layer of olive oil to prevent discoloration, and seal the containers with airtight lids.

5. Label the containers with the date and contents, then store them in the freezer for up to six months. Thaw portions as needed for pasta dishes, sandwiches, salads, and more.

Conclusion:

With these three methods for freezing basil, you can now enjoy this fragrant herb all year round without losing its fresh flavor and aroma. Whether you choose to freeze whole leaves, basil cubes, or make an appetizing pesto sauce, you’ll have delicious basil at your fingertips whenever you need it!
