3 Ways to Dance Kizomba

Introduction

Kizomba, a sensual dance form originating from Angola, has gained massive popularity due to its unique blend of sensuality and rhythm. This elegant dance style is a perfect way to embrace cultural fusion and connect with your partner in a different way. In this article, we’ll explore three ways to dance Kizomba so that even beginners can step onto the dance floor with confidence.

1. Basic Kizomba Steps

To start dancing Kizomba, you must first learn the basic steps. The fundamental concept is stepping to the beat while focusing on connection with your partner. Both dancers should maintain a straight upper body posture and relaxed knees throughout the dance. The basic steps involve walking syncopated movements to a count of eight:

1. Leader takes a step forward with their left foot

2. Steps forward with their right foot (passing beside the left)

3. Steps slightly back diagonally with their left foot

4. Together, stepping in place with their right foot

5. Follower steps backwards with their right foot

6. Steps forward with their left foot (passing beside the right)

7. Steps slightly back diagonally with their right foot

8. Together, stepping in place with their left foot

As you master these basic movements, try incorporating spontaneous turns and pauses for more advanced patterns.

2. Body Connection and Timing

One of the main elements setting Kizomba apart from other dance styles is its emphasis on body connection and timing between partners. A strong connection allows for more precise lead-follow response and an overall smoother dance experience.

During Kizomba, dancers maintain chest contact while positioning their arms in different holds or embraces (depending on style variation). Adopt a comfortable posture that allows both partners to feel each other’s movements.

Additionally, timing is essential for staying together in Kizomba’s rhythmical patterns – particularly syncopating steps to match musical elements. Stay alert to your partner’s cues and remember to maintain the count throughout the dance.

3. Styling and Sensuality

Styling is another vital aspect of Kizomba—expressing your unique personality while dancing is encouraged. Fluid body movements and intricate footwork help make Kizomba a beautiful dance to watch.

To add a touch of sensuality, dancers often include subtle hip or leg movements, head tilts, and gentle caresses in their choreography. Such moves should be implemented organically – they mustn’t disrupt the flow or connection with your partner.

Conclusion

Whether you’re just starting or looking to refine your Kizomba skills, these three approaches will help you build a solid foundation for this captivating dance form. Start with mastering basic steps, perfecting body connection and timing, and finally exploring your personal style with sensual movements. With practice and a dedicated mindset, you’ll soon be ready to take the Kizomba dance floor by storm!
