3 Ways to Change Your Name in Tennessee

Changing your name can be an important decision for various reasons, such as marriage, divorce, or personal preference. In Tennessee, there are several options available to change your name. This article will provide you with three ways to change your name in Tennessee.

1. Name Change Due to Marriage or Divorce

The most common reason for a name change is through marriage or divorce. When you get married, your marriage certificate serves as proof of a legal name change. After the ceremony, the certificate is filed with the local county clerk’s office. To change your name on important documents like your passport, driver’s license, and social security card, you will need to present the certified copy of your marriage certificate.

Similarly, when you go through a divorce and want to revert to your maiden name or another previous surname, you can request the change during the divorce process. Make sure the judge includes the necessary order in your final divorce decree. This decree serves as legal proof of your new name and can be used to update essential records and documents.

2. Name Change via Court Petition

If you’re looking for a way to change your name that’s not related to marriage or divorce, consider filing a court petition. In Tennessee, this process involves submitting a petition to your local county court and outlining the reasons for wanting a new name.

To begin this process:

– Fill out a “Petition for Name Change” form.

– Pay any applicable fees.

– Publish a notice of your intent in a local newspaper.

– Attend your scheduled court hearing where a judge will decide whether or not to grant the name change request.

If your petition has been approved, you will be issued a court order documenting the official name change.

3. Changing Your Name on Official Documents

Once you have legally changed your name (through marriage/divorce or by court petition), it’s essential to update all relevant personal documents. Here’s a brief guide to help you update common records:

– Social Security Card: Contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) to update your name on your social security card. You’ll need to provide the necessary documentation (e.g., marriage certificate or court order) and a form of identification.

– Driver’s License: Visit the local Tennessee Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office with your proof of name change and your current driver’s license to have it updated.

– Passport: To update your name on your passport, complete and submit the appropriate application form, along with the required documentation and fees.

In conclusion, changing your name in Tennessee is a relatively straightforward process. Depending on the reasons behind the change, you can accomplish it through marriage or divorce proceedings or by filing a court petition. Once you’ve completed this step, remember to update all essential documents to ensure everything is consistent and up-to-date with your new identity.
