Introduction:

Giant African Millipedes are fascinating creatures that have become increasingly popular as pets due to their unique appearance and low maintenance requirements. These gentle giants are native to East Africa and can grow up to 10 inches in length. If you’re considering keeping one of these mesmerizing arthropods as a pet, it’s crucial to understand the proper ways to care for them. Here are three essential aspects of providing a comfortable and healthy environment for your Giant African Millipede.

1. Creating a Suitable Habitat:

The first step in caring for your Giant African Millipede is setting up an appropriate enclosure that mimics the creature’s natural habitat. A glass or plastic terrarium with a minimum size of 12 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches tall is ideal for one millipede, though larger enclosures are always better.

– Substrate: Use a substrate at least 4-5 inches deep, consisting of a mix of organic topsoil, coconut coir, and rotten leaves or compost. Avoid using any substrates containing chemicals or pesticides as they can be harmful to the millipedes.

– Temperature and Humidity: Maintain the temperature within their enclosure between 72-80°F (22-27°C) with the humidity level around 75-85%. This can be achieved by using an under-tank heating pad and misting the enclosure with water regularly.

– Hiding Spots: Provide hiding places like cork bark, hollowed-out logs, and artificial caves to give them a sense of safety and help reduce stress.

2. Feeding Your Millipede:

Giant African Millipedes are herbivores that feed primarily on decaying plant matter. They derive the majority of their nutrition from fruits and vegetables like apples, bananas, cucumber, carrot, lettuce, pumpkin, squash, and sweet potato.

– Offer a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables every couple of days. Cut them into small pieces and remove any uneaten food after 24 hours to avoid attracting mold or pests.

– Make sure to occasionally sprinkle calcium powder or crushed-cuttlebone on their food to provide the necessary calcium for healthy exoskeleton growth.

– Additionally, leave a small shallow dish of water in the enclosure for your millipede to drink from, but ensure it’s not too deep to prevent drowning.

3. Handling and Interaction:

Giant African Millipedes are generally docile creatures that can be handled gently. However, it is essential to understand the right way to handle them and some key precautions.

– Always wash your hands before and after handling your millipede to minimize the risk of transferring harmful bacteria or substances.

– Pick up your millipede by allowing it to crawl onto your hand rather than grabbing it. Be gentle, patient, and avoid any sudden movements that could scare them.

– Limit handling time to avoid stressing the millipede; 10-15 minutes per session is a good guideline.

Conclusion:

Taking proper care of Giant African Millipedes requires patience, time, and commitment. Providing a suitable habitat, a balanced diet, gentle interactions while ensuring their safety will ensure your millipede thrives in its new home. With proper care, these endearing creatures can be an enjoyable pet for years to come!
