3 Easy Ways to Use Curry Powder

Curry powder is a versatile and flavorful spice blend that can effortlessly elevate your dishes. Originating from the Indian subcontinent, curry powder combines various spices to create a bold and aromatic flavor profile. Whether you’re new to using this spice mix or a seasoned pro, we’ve got three easy ways to incorporate curry powder into your culinary repertoire.

1. Curry Powder in Soups and Stews

For a simple way to infuse flavor into your soups and stews, try adding some curry powder early on in the cooking process. It works particularly well in thick lentil soups or stews, chicken or vegetable-based broths, or even chili recipes. Begin with 1-2 teaspoons of curry powder per quart of liquid, adjusting to taste as needed. Adding the spice blend directly to the base allows it to fully meld with other ingredients, providing an underlying layer of richness and complexity.

Here’s how you can do it:

a) Heat a tablespoon of oil in a pot over medium heat.

b) Add diced onions and cook until they begin to soften.

c) Stir in your desired amount of curry powder, allowing it to toast for about 30 seconds.

d) Add your choice of vegetables, protein, and liquid (broth or water), then bring everything to a boil.

e) Simmer until your ingredients are cooked through, adjusting seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.

2. Curry Powder as a Marinade

Inject bold flavors into meats like chicken, turkey, pork, or lamb by using curry powder as part of your marinade. Simply combine equal parts curry powder and olive oil (or another oil of your choice), then add minced garlic, grated ginger, salt, and pepper for an added kick.

To prepare the marinade:

a) In a bowl or resealable plastic bag, mix together your chosen ingredients: typically 2-4 tablespoons of curry powder, and an equal amount of oil.

b) Add your choice of protein, ensuring it’s fully coated in the marinade mixture.

c) Let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, but ideally 2-4 hours for better flavor penetration.

d) Cook the marinated protein using your preferred method—grilling, baking, or pan-searing all work well.

3. Curry Powder as a Seasoning for Vegetables and Rice

Curry powder can instantly elevate the flavor of your vegetable dishes or rice preparations. For veggies, try roasting, steaming, or sautéing them with a sprinkle of curry powder alongside salt and pepper. Alternatively, add curry powder to your next pot of rice for an aromatic side dish that complements any meal.

To prepare curried vegetables or rice:

a) In a frying pan or wok, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat.

b) Add chopped vegetables or cooked rice, stirring to coat evenly with oil.

c) Sprinkle 1-2 teaspoons of curry powder onto the vegetables or rice (adjusting to taste), and stir until evenly distributed.

d) Cook until vegetables are tender or rice is warmed through. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.

In conclusion, curry powder is a pantry staple that offers a world of culinary possibilities. With its complex, aromatic flavor profile, it can transform your kitchen creations without much effort. Next time you’re looking to elevate a dish, remember these three easy ways to use curry powder – in soups and stews, as a marinade for proteins, or as a seasoning for vegetables and rice.
