Introduction

A burnt tongue can be an incredibly painful experience. Whether it’s from a hot cup of coffee or a sizzling slice of pizza, the pain can last for several days and cause discomfort while eating and drinking. The good news is that you don’t have to suffer in silence. Here are 13 ways to soothe a burnt tongue and help you get back to enjoying your favorite foods.

1. Cold Water

Rinse your mouth with cold water immediately after burning your tongue. This can help reduce pain and inflammation.

2. Ice

Sucking on an ice cube or ice chips can provide relief to your burnt tongue. The cold temperature helps numb the affected area, reducing pain and swelling.

3. Over-the-counter Pain Relievers

Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help alleviate the pain of a burnt tongue.

4. Salt Water Rinse

Mix a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, then swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting out. Salt water can help reduce inflammation and promote healing.

5. Milk

Drinking cold milk or holding it in your mouth can provide some relief due to its cooling effect on the burnt area.

6. Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera is known for its natural healing properties. Apply a small amount of gel directly onto your tongue, which can help soothe and heal the burn.

7. Honey

Honey has anti-inflammatory properties that can ease pain and swelling on your burnt tongue. Apply a small amount onto the reddened area using a cotton swab or your finger.

8. Yogurt

Yogurt with active cultures can help soothe and cool down a burnt tongue due to its cold temperature and probiotic benefits.

9. Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oil is known for its healing properties. Gently apply some oil to the burnt area to promote recovery and reduce inflammation.

10. Cucumber

Slice a cool cucumber and hold it against the affected area on your tongue. This can help cool and soothe your burnt tongue.

11. Sugar

Suck on a sugar cube or apply a pinch of granulated sugar directly onto the burn. This can help alleviate pain by drawing out excess fluids from the burnt tissue.

12. Baking Soda

Make a paste by mixing baking soda with water, then apply it directly to your burnt tongue. Baking soda can help neutralize the acidic environment caused by heat and support healing.

13. Herbal Tea

Herbal teas, such as chamomile, lavender, or calendula, are known for their soothing properties. After cooling down, gently swish a mouthful of herbal tea around your mouth before swallowing or spitting it out.

Conclusion

A burnt tongue is no fun, but with these 13 soothing remedies, you can find relief and get back to enjoying your favorite foods without discomfort. Remember always to be mindful when consuming hot foods or beverages to prevent future burns.
