Your oven is gross. Here’s the Best Way to Deep Clean an Oven with Nontoxic Items

When it comes to cleaning your kitchen, the oven is often overlooked until smoke tipping off burning grease reminds us of its dirty state. It’s a daunting task, but with the right nontoxic items, you can restore your oven to its former glory.

Firstly, remove all the racks and soak them in hot soapy water. As they soak, mix a paste of baking soda and water in a bowl. The consistency should be spreadable but not too liquid. Generously coat the inside of the oven with this mixture, avoiding the heating elements. Baking soda acts as a gentle abrasive and helps break down tough, baked-on gunk.

Let this paste sit for at least 12 hours, or overnight for best results. During this time, baking soda will lift and loosen grime, making it easier to scrub off later.

Once the time’s up, take a damp cloth and wipe out as much of the baking soda mixture as possible. You’ll notice that much of the grease and dirt comes away with ease. For stubborn spots, use a silicone or plastic spatula to gently scrape away residue.

Next, put white vinegar in a spray bottle and spritz it anywhere you still see baking soda residue inside your oven. The vinegar will react with the baking soda and gently foam. This combination further helps to remove grimy deposits.

After wiping down the oven with clean water and ensuring all cleaners are removed, replace your sparkling clean racks back into your now immaculate appliance.

To maintain a clean oven, place an oven liner on the bottom or introduce a regular cleaning schedule using these non-toxic ingredients. Not only are they effective cleaners but also safer for you and your family compared to commercial chemicals-laden options.

Adopting this method ensures that next time your cooking results won’t be tainted by previous recipes’ remnants—and maybe those smoke alarms can enjoy some peace too!
