Yakuza: Like A Dragon is the latest entry in the long-running Yakuza series, developed and published by Sega. Unlike its predecessors, Yakuza: Like A Dragon features a new protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, and a new combat system that replaces the traditional beat ’em up gameplay with turn-based battles.

Story

The game’s story follows Ichiban Kasuga, a low-ranking member of the Arakawa Family, who takes the fall for a crime he didn’t commit. After serving 18 years in prison, he is released and finds out that the world he knew has changed. His family has turned on him, and he has to start from scratch. Along the way, he meets a colorful cast of characters who help him on his journey to uncover the truth behind his betrayal.

The story is well-written and engaging, with plenty of twists and turns to keep players guessing. It’s also full of heartfelt moments and emotional beats that make the characters feel real and relatable.

Gameplay

Yakuza: Like A Dragon’s new combat system is a departure from the series’ traditional beat ’em up gameplay. Battles now take place in turn-based fashion, with each character taking their turn to attack or use a special move. The system is similar to that of classic Japanese RPGs, such as Dragon Quest.

While some fans may be disappointed by the change, the new combat system is well-implemented and adds a refreshing twist to the series’ gameplay. It also allows for greater strategy and depth in battles, as players must carefully consider their moves and party composition.

Outside of battles, the game features a variety of side activities and mini-games to keep players entertained. These include karaoke, arcade games, and even managing a business. The city of Yokohama is also beautifully realized, with plenty of detail and atmosphere to immerse players in the world.

Conclusion

Yakuza: Like A Dragon is a fantastic addition to the series, with a great story, engaging characters, and a refreshing new combat system. While some fans may be disappointed by the departure from the series’ traditional gameplay, the new system is well-implemented and adds a new layer of depth to battles. Overall, Yakuza: Like A Dragon is a must-play for fans of the series and newcomers alike.
