Why Aren’t There B Batteries? (2022)

You’ve seen A batteries, AA batteries, AAA batteries, and even C and D batteries. But have you ever wondered why there are no B batteries? It’s a question that has puzzled many, and the answer is surprisingly simple: they never existed.

The reason for this absence lies in the historical development of battery sizes. In the early days of portable power, manufacturers experimented with various sizes and shapes to optimize performance and convenience. The “A” battery was the original standard, and its size was progressively scaled down to accommodate smaller devices.

As technology evolved and devices became more compact, the need for smaller batteries arose, leading to the creation of the “AA” and then the “AAA” battery. The “C” and “D” batteries were developed for higher power applications.

So, where does “B” fit in? It was simply skipped over! It’s speculated that the letter “B” was likely avoided due to its similarity to the existing “A” battery, potentially causing confusion in the market.

While “B” may not be a standard battery size, its absence is a reminder of the sometimes arbitrary nature of naming conventions. The evolution of battery sizes reflects the changing needs of technology and the ongoing pursuit of smaller, more efficient power sources.
