North Carolina may not be the first state that comes to mind when you think about top-notch pizza in the United States, yet surprisingly, it houses several towns where the art of pizza-making is taken very seriously. While New York and Chicago continue to battle for the nation’s deep-dish or thin crust throne, a few North Carolina towns have snuck their way into the hearts of pizza aficionados across the country.

First on the list is Asheville. This mountain town has established a name for itself with a laudable variety of artisanal pizza restaurants. Locals and tourists alike rave about the sourdough crusts and innovative toppings available here. Asheville’s pizzerias often source local ingredients, contributing to fresh flavors that elevate their pies above the standard fare.

Charlotte, the state’s largest city, has vigorously stepped up its game in recent years with an impressive array of pizza joints. From authentic Neapolitan pizzerias to creative gourmet options, Charlotte’s chefs are making pizzas that are both delicious and diverse. The city’s dedication to quality has turned several of its establishments into must-visit spots for anyone seeking the best pizza experience in North Carolina.

Wilmington, with its laid-back coastal vibe, offers a surprising variety of exceptional pizza places. The local preference leans towards thinner crusts with a delightful crunch and toppings that pay homage to Wilmington’s seaside location. Seafood toppings like shrimp and scallops are fresh off the boat and can be found highlighting the menus at various Wilmington pizzerias.

And then there’s Carrboro, known for its bohemian spirit and foodie culture. The town’s pizzerias reflect its eclectic community with innovative pies that push culinary boundaries without sacrificing authentic flavors. Whether it’s a traditional Margherita or a pie featuring locally made vegan cheese, Carrboro has something for everyone.

These towns showcase how North Carolina’s culinary landscape possesses hidden gems in terms of great American pizza destinations. With an emphasis on fresh ingredients, each place offers a unique take on this beloved dish, ensuring that visitors won’t be disappointed when hunting for some of the best pizzas among U.S. cities right in NC towns.
