What to Do When Your Phone Number Is Being Spoofed

In today’s world of connectivity, being contacted by a scammer or spammer is sadly not an uncommon occurrence. One of the most distressing methods scammers use involves caller ID spoofing – a technique that tricks victims into picking up their phone by making them believe that the call is coming from someone they know or a reputable organization.

Here are some steps you can take when you discover that your phone number is being spoofed:

1. Verify the caller’s identity

If you receive a call from someone you do not know or a company you are not familiar with, verify their identity before providing any personal details or sensitive information. Ask for their name, job title, and the company they represent. A reputable company will have no problem with this.

2. Report the scam call

If you suspect that the call is a scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which monitors and tracks reports of fraudulent phone calls. You can also report the incident to your service provider, who can attempt to trace the call’s origin and potentially stop it from happening in the future.

3. Block the number

If you continue to receive spoofed calls from the same number, you can block it on your phone. Once blocked, calls from that number will be automatically rejected and will not ring through to your phone.

4. Use mobile security software

Several mobile security applications are available that can identify and block spoofed calls. These apps can provide additional protection beyond your phone’s built-in capabilities.

5. Stay vigilant

Finally, it is important to stay vigilant whenever you answer a call from a number you do not recognize. Be cautious about providing personal information over the phone, and remember that legitimate companies will typically not ask for sensitive information such as social security numbers or credit card information over the phone.

In conclusion, receiving spoofed calls can be frustrating and unsettling. By following these steps, you can help protect yourself from falling victim to phone scams and help prevent others from experiencing the same issues.
