What is the Worst and Best Time to Send a Survey?

When it comes to collecting data through surveys, timing can significantly impact the response rate and quality of the information you gather. The best and worst times to send a survey can vary depending on the audience, but there are some general trends that you can consider to maximize your responses.

The best time to send a survey is typically when your target audience is most likely to be checking their email. For many working professionals, this tends to be on Tuesdays through Thursdays, between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. During this mid-morning window, people have usually settled into their workday but are not yet approaching the lunchtime break, which means they might be more receptive to taking a short pause to respond to a survey. Additionally, sending surveys early in the week avoids the dip in productivity that can sometimes occur as people wind down for the weekend.

It’s also wise to avoid Mondays when people are often overwhelmed with catching up on work from the weekend and planning their week ahead. Likewise, Fridays are not ideal because many people are finishing up tasks and may be less willing to engage in additional activities that aren’t urgent.

Furthermore, it’s important to consider the time of day. Very early mornings or late evenings tend to result in lower response rates since these times outside of typical working hours are less convenient for many people.

Holidays and vacation periods are also times when survey engagement will likely be low due to people being less available or interested due to other commitments or leisure activities.

However, if your target demographic includes students or certain professionals who may have different schedules, then you would need to adjust your timing accordingly. Surveying students might be more effective in the afternoon or evening when they are out of school or have finished their classes.

In conclusion, while there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer for every audience, aiming for mid-morning on a Tuesday through Thursday, while avoiding very early, late hours, weekends, and holidays can generally increase your chances of getting a higher response rate for your surveys. Tailoring your send-off time based on a clear understanding of your audience’s routine will further enhance the effectiveness of your survey strategy.
